The Department of English at the Canadian University of Bangladesh (CUB) successfully organized “Nazrul Year Celebration 2026”, commemorating the enduring legacy, rebellious spirit, and philosophy of equality of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.

The vibrant cultural programme brought together faculty members and students to celebrate Nazrul’s revolutionary ideas, literary contributions, and timeless cultural legacy. The inaugural session was graced by the presence of Prof. Dr. H. M. Jahirul Haque, Honorable Vice Chancellor of the Canadian University of Bangladesh, whose insightful remarks added depth and significance to the celebration.

The programme featured prominent Nazrul Sangeet artist and researcher Dr. Sampa Das as the Chief Guest and keynote speaker. In her research-oriented discussion, Dr. Das highlighted various dimensions of Nazrul’s literary philosophy, social consciousness, and artistic legacy. Her captivating musical performance further enriched the programme and deeply engaged the audience.

The students of the Department of English presented a vibrant array of cultural performances. Chandan and Naim performed Nazrul Sangeet, while Nabila and Oindrila presented a graceful dance performance. Roshni, Faria, and Afrin jointly performed a poetry recital, adding further diversity and artistic appeal to the programme.

As a special tribute to Rabindranath Tagore on his 85th death anniversary, the students also staged an emotional dramatic adaptation of Tagore’s celebrated short story “The Postmaster.” The performances of Rono, Naumi, and Bappi received particular appreciation for their compelling portrayal of the characters.

The successful staging of the drama was supported by the script prepared by the Head of the Department, Rezina Sultana Pia, along with the joint direction of Rohan and his team. Rohan also played an important role in the overall supervision of the production, while Shihab contributed to the stage ambience and lighting, enhancing the overall theatrical experience.

Speaking at the programme, Dr. Sampa Das expressed her appreciation for the dedication and enthusiasm demonstrated by the teachers and students of the Department of English. She observed that, at a time of growing social challenges and moral degradation, CUB’s initiative to commemorate the death anniversary of Kazi Nazrul Islam represents a meaningful and distinctive effort to honour the poet’s legacy.

Dr. Das particularly expressed her gratitude to Rezina Sultana Pia, Head of the Department of English, for her commitment to nurturing students through creativity, intellectual engagement, and cultural activities. She praised the department’s dedication and sincere efforts to inspire students and contribute to building a better future.

The celebration concluded with appreciation for all participating students, faculty members, organizers, and guests whose collective efforts contributed to making Nazrul Year Celebration 2026 a memorable and meaningful cultural event at the Canadian University of Bangladesh.
