
CUB Successfully Conducts OSH Awareness Workshop to Promote Safety Culture among Students
The Canadian University of Bangladesh (CUB) successfully conducted a day-long Occupational Safety & Health (OSH) Awareness Training Program titled “Creating Safety Awareness for Future Professionals” on 20 January 2026 at the CUB Auditorium.
The program was organized by Marine Inspection & Solutions Ltd. (MISL), Bangladesh, in collaboration with the Department of Shipping and Maritime Science, CUB, and hosted by the School of Science and Engineering. The workshop aimed to enhance occupational safety awareness and professional competence among students to prepare them for real-world industry challenges.
Mr. Chowdhury Jafarullah Sharafat, Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Canadian University of Bangladesh, attended the program as the Chief Guest, while Prof. Dr. H. M. Jahirul Haque, Vice-Chancellor of CUB, was present as the Special Guest. Both dignitaries highlighted the importance of integrating safety culture into higher education and professional training.
The event was also attended by Prof. A. S. M. Sirajul Haque, Treasurer; A. S. M. G. Faruk, Joint Registrar & Registrar (In-Charge); Prof. Dr. Kazi Abu Taher, Dean, School of Science & Engineering; Prof. Dr. Fazilatun Nessa, Dean, School of Public Health & Life Sciences; and Prof. Zahurul Alam, Dean, School of Business, Canadian University of Bangladesh.

Heads of various departments were present, including Capt. Md. Nasir Uddin, Associate Professor and Chairman, Department of Shipping and Maritime Science; Benazir Rahman, Head (Acting), Department of Business Administration; Rezina Sultana, Chairperson, Department of English; Dr. Saiful Hoque, Advisor and Head, Department of Media, Communication and Journalism; Md. Hasanuzzaman, Chairman, Department of Computer Science and Engineering and Mohammad Sunzad Sheikh, Assistant Professor & Head, Department of Law. MD. Mosharraf Hussain, Deputy Registrar & Controller of Examinations (In-Charge), and Kazi Sabbir Hossain, Deputy Director, HR & Operations, were also present along with faculty members, officials, and students from different departments.
Prof. Dr. H. M. Jahirul Haque, Honorable Vice-Chancellor of the Canadian University of Bangladesh, expressed his sincere appreciation to the Department of Shipping and Maritime Science, School of Science and Engineering for organizing such a well-structured and impactful program. In his address, he strongly emphasized the importance of safety in every workplace, highlighting that a strong safety culture is essential not only for professional environments but also for sustainable development and responsible leadership.
Prof. A. S. M. Sirajul Haque, Treasurer of the Canadian University of Bangladesh, addressed the audience by highlighting the institutional commitment of CUB toward ensuring safety, discipline, and quality education. In his speech, he emphasized that occupational safety and health awareness is an essential component of professional excellence, regardless of the sector or discipline.
Prof. Dr. Kazi Abu Taher, Dean, School of Science & Engineering, warmly welcomed all guests, resource persons, faculty members, and students on behalf of the School. In his speech, he reiterated that safety must always be the first priority, stressing the need for continuous awareness, training, and commitment to safety practices across all disciplines.

Capt. Md. Nasir Uddin, Associate Professor and Chairman, Department of Shipping and Maritime Science, shared valuable insights drawn from his extensive professional experience at sea. He emphasized that safety is not just a set of rules, but a mindset and a way of life, equally essential onboard ships, in all workplaces, and in everyday personal activities. By sharing real-life maritime experiences, he demonstrated how strong safety awareness, effective teamwork, and timely decision-making play a vital role in preventing accidents and saving lives. The participants greatly enjoyed and appreciated his practical and experience-based discussions.
He actively engaged both marine-background and non-marine students, explaining that safety principles are universal and relevant to every profession. He encouraged students to develop situational awareness, risk assessment abilities, and a sense of personal responsibility from their student life. He further assured that the Department of Shipping and Maritime Science, along with the Maritime Science Club, will continue to organize regular training programs, seminars, workshops, and industry interaction sessions, open to students from all academic backgrounds, to foster leadership, professionalism, and a strong safety culture. He also encouraged all students to join the Maritime Science Club.
He concluded his speech by motivating everyone to prioritize safety and encouraging students from all academic disciplines to actively participate in future programs arranged by the Department of Shipping and Maritime Science.
Engr. Shamsul Haque Emon, QHSE Professional and Director & CEO of Marine Inspection & Solutions Ltd. (MISL), delivered key sessions on occupational safety practices and industry standards. The technical training sessions were conducted by Mr. Kamrul Islam, HSE Professional and MISL Trainer, who shared practical knowledge on hazard identification, risk assessment, and workplace safety management.
At the end of the program, certificates were awarded to participating students in recognition of their successful completion of the training. As a token of encouragement, participants also received gift T-shirts. Crests were presented to the honorable Guests as a mark of appreciation for their valuable presence and support.
The workshop concluded successfully with active participation and positive feedback, reflecting CUB’s strong commitment to promoting occupational safety and health awareness among future professionals.
